Alpha lipoic acid, or ALA, is a fatty acid and antioxidant found in all cells in the body.

ALA allows the cells to convert blood sugar (glucose) into energy needed by the body to perform daily functions. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals which are chemicals found in the body that can potentially cause harm. ALA is unique because it has the ability to function in both fat and water which is uncommon in other vitamins. Another antioxidant that helps to rid the body of harmful chemicals and substances is glutothione. ALA increases the production of glutothione because it recycles this antioxidant after the body has used it.

Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) Helps Body

Studies have been done recently showing the affects ALA has on the body. As stated in Lipoic Acid: The Metabolic Antioxidant, by Richard A. Passwater, PhD, ALA contributes in many ways by assisting with the aging process, helping the body to eliminate waste such as free radicals, and plays a part in helping the body heal. ALA has also been found to assist the body in fighting cancer, heart disease, and diabetes as well.

Natural Sources of ALA

Unfortunately, despite the fact ALA is found and produced in the body, it is usually not found in amounts needed by the body from the average diet. It is found in leafy green vegetables such as spinach, chard, collard greens, and broccoli. It can also be found in organic organ meat such as liver. Cooking these foods can allow the nutrients to leech out of the foods into the cooking water, which is usually discarded after the cooking process. Most individuals are not interested in a raw organic diet which is recommended in order to gain all the nutritional values provided by foods. People who choose not to partake in a raw organic diet may find that they need to use supplements to give the body all of the vitamins and nutrients needed.

ALA Supplements

Supplements can be added to a person’s diet to provide nutrients and vitamins that are not found in the foods eaten. Super foods are those that have all of the nutrients and vitamins needed for a healthy diet. Supplements made from super foods, which have not been over processed, tend to be the most useful to the body since the nutrients are found in their natural form instead of a synthetic form. Leafy green super foods are a great source of ALA. Blue green algae are a spectacular super food and are processed into a supplement known as spirulina. Spirulina contains some essential nutrients, including ALA.

ALA has been linked to helping the body fight off diseases. With proper nutrition and a healthy life style an individual can lead a longer, healthier, and happier life. Adding it to a person's diet, whether through natural sources or supplements, can be a great way to beging a healthier life style.
